Stanley J. Zappa’s new album “Muster Point” is a culmination of his friendship with Finnish drummer/percussionist Simo Laihonen (of Black Motor). Stanley, whose career has thus far progressed far outside of the mainstream jazz eye, steps forward with a strong internationally noted release here, making a lasting musical statement with Simo. The duo adds Black Motor bassist Ville Rauhala into the mix on a handful of tracks. The spirit of live improvisation is remarkably present here both for the duo recordings and the trio, culled together from live and studio sessions in Finland, fall 2018. In the album liner notes (originally a letter sent to the We Jazz team), Stanley tells his story from musical adventures with the likes of Milford Graves and Bill Dixon to battling cancer and beyond. What you hear on this album is life.
Stanley J. Zappa, originally from New Jersey, now based in Oliver, BC (Canada) is a highly expressive musician whose career has so far progressed largely under the radar. Part of the lineage of a musical family (his uncle Frank should need no introduction), Zappa’s story is that of a true craftsman, now coming into fruition with a like-minded collaborator, Simo Laihonen. Laihonen is best known from his long-standing trio formation Black Motor, also featuring bassist Ville Rauhala featured on the trio tracks on this recording.
