New Order’s debut album, often referred to as being the “difficult one”. Released in the UK on 19 November 1981 and produced by Martin Hannett in the Strawberry Studios, Stockport.
The artwork, done by Peter Saville, is based on a poster by Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero for the 1932 exposition “Futurismo Trentino”. Saville adapted it so that the F stands for Factory and the L (Roman numeral) for 50. The album colour in the UK was blue with blue artwork, while in the US it was white with burgundy artwork.
The album peaked at # 30 in the UK album charts.
Peter Hook sings on “Dreams Never End” and “Doubts Even Here”, and Gillian Gilbert providing the voiceover on the latter.
